Spare parts management (in a local warehouse, for example) involves the registration of outgoing / incoming spare parts to maintain an accurate inventory of local stock for both accounting and reordering purposes. Equipment parts are classified according to three categories:
- Spare Parts: parts of the machinery whose failure causes a system or subsystem to stop, which are not usually replaced on an elapsed time basis (machine operating hours) and which can usually be repaired (Power Supply, Card, Driver, etc.).
- Wearable Parts: parts subject to wear and tear as a result of machinery/system operation and usually replaced during scheduled maintenance. Their lifetime is determined by total machinery operating hours (i.e. belts etc.).
- Consumables: special materials used by postal equipment (i.e. ink, labels, etc.), which are consumed during the production process and by machines.
